The Client Like most cities in the country, the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, is a conglomerate of individual departments and government entities, providing valuable services to various constituents. And just like every city, Cincinnati has a vast spectrum of people, businesses, communities, and cultures to represent. Not to mention, a different neighborhood behind every rolling hill.
The Challenge Attempt to brand an entire city by tapping into the multiple visions of its people; strengthen the brand and city presence by designing a Web site that provides consistent visual and verbal communication to its constituents, regardless of the department or entity
- Develop a taxonomy and navigation system that speaks to the viewer’s hierarchy of needs—Do Business, Live, Work, or Play
- Provide easy-to-use online services that make it simple to access assistance, submit requests, or even pay bills
- Provide a user interface that meets ADA compliancy and is usable by all individuals
- Develop an extensive content management application so that all departments can maintain current communication within a structured and professionally designed online application
Needless to say, the crux of the design solution was to build a site that could meet the many requirements of such diverse audiences and objectives, as well as be a compelling destination for anyone interested in the city of Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Haverstick Approach One striking element of the site’s design is that each visit literally reflects a different facet of the city. A primary photograph has been integrated into the interface design and alternates with each visit. One visit may highlight the city’s popular fireworks festival on the river; another may exhibit its renowned Cincinnati Zoo or Aronoff Center. Each photograph is meant to speak to the diversity and perspectives of Cincinnati and its people.
The Result The city has officially completed the initial phase of the site’s multiphase project plan. And while it is only the first step in a long process to unify the many departments, processes, and documents of the city, the site has already received a very positive and warm reception from the communities and businesses of Cincinnati, Ohio.
It serves as an excellent example of how quality design can improve the services and image of local civic governments. |
