The Client Premier Manufacturing Support Services provides a number of services to the automotive industry. Premier engages a team of individuals on a plant site to manage equipment, perform custodial services, and other activities.
To be competitive, Premier has automated many of its administrative tasks. The most important of these applications is Premier’s time entry and reporting system. Built on the Lotus Notes/Domino platform, the application is used by Premier’s team to enter and report time from the field. Time records are reviewed and the data is then integrated into its billing system.
The Challenge As usage of the time entry application grew, reporting became cumbersome. Running a weekly report could take upwards of one to two hours. Users became weary of using the application because of the loss in productivity while waiting for a report to compile. At the same time, many of Premier’s clients were asking that the application be used over the Web instead of using the Lotus Notes client.
The Haverstick Approach Haverstick was engaged to re-engineer the reporting component and build a Web-user interface to the application. We continued to use Lotus Domino for the application server and selected Java as the language to rebuild the reporting engine. These choices allowed us to make the requested changes without Premier having to reinvest in a total rewrite of the application.
The Result The result of the engagement was a Web-enabled version of the time entry application that allows Premier associates access from any Web browser. The rebuilt reporting feature reduced the compilation time from hours to seconds. |
