The Challenge
Two divisions of Hillenbrand Industries (Batesville Casket Company and Forethought Insurance) engaged Haverstick Consulting to provide Lotus Notes expertise and support during a period of consolidation of the IT departments of the two divisions. Since they were also in the process of migrating from a Novell Netware network to a Windows NT network, they asked for any assistance we could provide in that area as well.
- Temporarily relieve staff of current Notes/Domino support and provide NT assistance so they could concentrate on other consolidation issues
- Bring the Lotus Notes/Domino environment to a current, consistent version
- Consolidate Notes/Domino servers where possible
- Install antivirus protection for the combined Notes/Domino environment
- Provide training and knowledge-transfer to newly hired employees to assume day-to-day support of the combined Notes/Domino infrastructure
The Haverstick Approach
Haverstick Consulting took a multistep approach to this project:
- As quickly as possible, achieve a good understanding of the current Notes/Domino infrastructure so that we could temporarily relieve staff of current support issues
- Develop a plan for upgrading and consolidating the Domino servers where appropriate
- Develop a plan for testing and implementing the division’s choice for antivirus protection on the Domino Servers
- Install and configure antivirus protection on Domino servers that would remain after consolidation
- Upgrade Domino servers to a current, consistent version
- Consolidate Domino servers where possible
- Document new configurations and maintenance procedures
- Train new staff members on Notes/Domino concepts and administration duties and provide knowledge-transfer about the current Notes/Domino environment
The Result
Haverstick Consulting filled an immediate need of the client by supplying knowledgeable, experienced assistance to help with Notes/Domino support during its consolidation efforts. In addition, the Notes/Domino infrastructure was upgraded and stabilized by bringing all the Domino servers up to the same version, consolidating servers where appropriate, and installing antivirus protection on the consolidated Domino servers. The upgraded infrastructure was more stable and better documented. |
